Vishnu Kannan – The Talented Champion
This week saw some exceptional performances and some underdogs ruling the charts. Chess KLUB brings to you results of our weekly tournaments along with a glimpse of some of the wonderful games that took place.
Chess KLUB Open Tournament
In the Open Tournament held on Saturday we had 81 participants with Vishnu Kannan as our champion with an excellent win rate of 71%.
Vishnu played an intense match against our runner up Saket Reddy, who had an amazing win rate of 74%. Vishnu opened the game with the Italian Game opening and they traded their queens early into the game. Vishnu became a pawn up in the middle game followed by Saket becoming a bishop up, giving him a good advantage. Vishnu posed aggressive threats on Saket’s king using his two rooks on the 7th rank. Since Vishnu was material down and in an aggressive position he forced the game into a three fold repitition draw.
In the third place we had Vivaan Bhatt with an admirable win rate of 76%.
Beginner Level Tournament
In the Beginner Tournament we had Aariv Upadhyay with a wonderful win rate of 65% followed by Yajat Biyani in second place with a fantastic win rate of 85%.
Our first seed and second seed played a great match against each other. Yajat gained Aariv’s centre pawn in the opening followed by gaining Aariv’s g2 pawn and rook. While Yajat was focused on gaining material, Aariv was threatening an attack on Yajat’s king. On the 8th move Aariv attacked Yajat’s king by capturing his f7 pawn forcing Yajat’s king to move out. Yajat missed a checkmate in one and got checkmated on the 9th move.
Our second runner up was Sean Siculiano with a win rate of 58%.
Intermediate Level Tournament
In the Intermediate Tournament we had 60 students participate with Rishab Ghosh as our champion with an incredible win rate of 82%.
Rishab played an aggressive game against Jay Mahendran in his final game. The game continued to be relatively equal till the middle game where the two opponents exchanged thor minor pieces. Rishab became a pawn up in the middle game. On the 24th move, Rishab gave a check that Jay defended by blundering his rook.This gave Rishab a decent advantage and he brought his rook into the game. On the 37th move Rishab checkmated Jay with his queen and rook.
Jethin Bastan was our runner up with a fabulous win rate of 92% followed by Adhvik Manoj in second runner up with a win rate of 79%.
Advanced Level Tournament
In the Advanced Tournament we had Saket Reddy as our champion with a grand win rate of 77% with his most interesting game being against Joshith Vurimi, our runner up who concluded the tournament with a win rate of 57%.
Saket played the Italian Game opening and Joshith had double pawns by the middle game. Saket became a pawn up after which the two players exchanged their queens and the game was between the two rooks. The rooks were exchanged soon after and the Saket created a passed pawn that he converted into a quen. On the 69th move Saket checkmated Joshith with his queen and king.
In the third place we had Sanjey Ramachandran with a win rate of 50%.
Beginner’s Battle Arena
In the second round of tournaments we began with the Beginner Battle Yajat Biyani as our champion with a record breaking win rate of 100%.
Yajat played his best game in his last round against Shreyan Basu, our runner up who had a win rate of 47%. Yajat became two pawns up and a rook up in the opening. In the middle game Shreyan blundered his queen giving Yajat a massive advantage. Yajat then went on to a win another rook and a knight after which Shreyan resigned on the 18th move.
Rayhan Ulla came third with a win rate of 64%.
Intermediate Battle Arena
Adhvik Manoj was the winner of our Intermediate Battle with an amazing win rate of 86%.
In second place we had Vivaan Bhatt with an incredible win rate of 75% and our first and second seed played a tactical game in their final round. They opened with the Queen’s Gambit Declined opening and the two played some of the best moves according to the computer analysis till the middle game. The two soon exchanged queens and entered the middle game where they were chasing each other’s pawns to make a passed pawn. In the end game Vivaan made two pawn blunders giving Adhvik a good advantage. Once Adhvik had his passed pawn on the 7th rank, Vivaan resigned.
Our second runner up was Rishab Ghosh with a win rate of 71%.
Advaned Battle Arena
Our final event of the week was the Advanced Battle where we had Sriranga Narapuram at the top of our winner list with an excellent win rate of 80%.
Sriranga played a brilliant match against our second runner up, Saket Reddy, in the last round. Saket played the Italian Game Opening and gained control of the centre early in the game.The two players traded their queen as they entered the middle game and the end game was between the two kings and each player had 5 pawns each. Sriranga managed to create a passed pawn in the end game and make a queen. Saket resigned on the 52nd move but completed the tournament with a wonderful win rate 20%.
In the second place we had Archit Singh with a fabulous win rate of 75%.
Conclusion
With another round of impressive games, this week too has come to an end. We expect to see similar results in the next week as well.
