There’s something electric about walking into a tournament hall buzzing with hundreds of players, chess boards, clocks ticking, and ambition thick in the air. The CHESS KLUB All India FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Tournament, held on 29th March 2026, was exactly that and beyond.
Hosted at the ACS Convention Hall, owned by Rajarajeshwari Medical College, this wasn’t just another tournament, it felt like a statement. A statement about scale, about intent, and about where Indian chess is headed.
With a staggering 817 players from 4 countries and 12 states, the tournament officially broke the record for the highest number of participants in a FIDE-rated rapid tournament in Bangalore. You could feel the energy, the chaos, the excitement, all wrapped into one massive playing hall.
The tournament followed a 9-round Swiss format, and like most rapid events, things escalated quickly. There’s no time to dwell in rapid chess, one mistake, and the game slips. One strong run, and suddenly you’re in contention. Across the rounds, there was a beautiful mix of experience and hunger. Higher-rated players tried to maintain control, while younger players came in fearless, often creating the biggest upsets of the day.
The showstopper of the day and the eventual winner of the tournament, Candidate Master - Sarveshwaran V, finished with an impressive 8 out of 9 points, and took home the Grand Prize of INR 22,000. Three players finished with the same score, making it a tight race till the very last round.
The final standings reflected just how competitive the field was, however, Sarveshwaran had an advantage because of the Buchholz system. Second in the list of winners, with the same score was FIDE Master Pranav K P, who won prize money worth INR 20,000. The champion and the runner-up were pitted against each other in the final round, and after a rather aggressive match, they chose to grab ½ a point each with a draw. Arul Anandh, in the third place, shared the same score as the winner and the runner-up and took home a grand prize of INR 18,000.
A special mention must go to the team of the best arbiters the city has seen come together under one roof. Managing a tournament of this scale is no easy task, but the event was conducted seamlessly. Pairings, results, and overall flow were handled with precision, allowing players to stay focused on what really mattered, their games.
What stood out most, though, was the atmosphere. It didn’t feel like just a competition, it felt like a community coming together. Game analysis happening in corners, players anxiously waiting between rounds, replaying critical moments, all of it added to the experience.
The event was graced by an esteemed panel of guests who exemplify excellence in both sports and academia. It was a privilege to host GrandMaster Thej Kumar, whose presence inspired every aspiring master in the room, alongside Dr. Satya Murthy (Dean of RR Medical College). We were also honored to have the technical precision of our officiating team, led by Chief Arbiter Vasanth and Deputy Chief Arbiter Saleem Baig.
For CHESS KLUB, this tournament wasn’t just successful, it was defining. Breaking records, hosting one of the largest rapid events in the city, and doing it at this level sets a new benchmark.
And if this is the direction things are moving in, it’s safe to say this is just the beginning.
