Parv Parikh – Champion of the Week
Chess KLUB brings weekly tournaments to students to allow them to practically display their skills. Let’s take a look at some of the exceptional games played this week and the winners of the week.
Chess KLUB Open Tournament
In the Chess KLUB Open Tournament held on 1st May, we had 74 participants, with Vivaan Bhatt as our Champion with a perfect score o 7 out of 7 points.
In the 6th round, Vivaan played an amazing match against Jethin Bastin, our runner up, who had a wonderful score of 6 points. The game began with the Italian Game Opening, and the game was almost equal till the middle game where Vivaan became a knight up through a pin on Jethin’s knight and Queen.
Vivaan then posed an attack on Jethin’s king that exposed his knight and brought Jethin’s king out. The two then exchanged their Queens, and their Rooks, and the end game was between Vivaan’s Rook and Bishop. Jethin resigned on the 41st move.
In third place, we had Parv Parikh with a score of 5.5.
Chess KLUB Beginner Tournament
In the Beginner Level Chess Tournament held on Sunday, we had Vaibhav Lokeshwaran at the top of our winner list with a record-breaking win rate of 100%.
Vaibhav played an interesting game against Harsika Kasilingam in the second round. The game began with Vaibhav trying to use the scholar’s mate on Harsika, which allowed Vaibhav to infiltrate Harsika’s king’s territory and forced Harsika’s king to come out. While posing an attack, Vaibhav blundered his Queen, which was followed by Harsika blundering her Queen as well.
As the game progressed, Vaibhav became a Rook and a knight up. Vaibhav then made another Queen in the end game and checkmated Harsika’s king on the 61st move. Although Harsika lost this game, she was our runner up at this event with a win rate of 50%, followed by Akshaay in third place.
Chess KLUB Intermediate Tournament
In the Intermediate Level Tournament, we had Parv Parikh as our Champion with a brilliant win rate of 87%, with his most impressive game being against Vivaan Bhatt, our runner up, who had a win rate of 79%.
The game began with the Italian Game Opening, and the two exchanged their Queens early into the game. Parv created a passed pawn to convert into a Queen, giving him a significant advantage. Parv then checkmated Vivaan’s king with his Queen and Rook on the 48th move. Our second runner up for the evening was Sabarish Kailasam, who had a win rate of 70%.
Chess KLUB Advanced Tournament
In the Chess KLUB Advanced Tournament, we had Advit Gupta at the top of the winner list with a record-breaking win rate of 100%.
Advit played an engaging game against Kinjal Chatterjee our second runner, who had a win rate of 67%. The game began with Four Knights Opening, and Advit became two pawns up in the middle game. After the two exchanged their Queens, Kinjal blundered her Rook, making Advit a Rook up. Advit then made a passed pawn that he converted into a Queen and checkmated Kinjal’s king on the 58th move.
In second place, we had Adhvik Manoj with a spectacular win rate of 90%.
Beginner Battle Arena
In the Beginner Battle Arena, we had Vihaan Sri as our Champion with a perfect win rate of 100%.
Vihaan played an excellent game against Vishwanath Chungi, and the game was equal till the middle game where the two exchanged their Queens. In the later part of the middle game, Vihaan won a Bishop and gained a Rook as well. Further, Vihaan even won the other Rook, giving him a huge advantage. Vihaan used this advantage to checkmate Vishwanath on the 33rd move using two Rooks.
In second place, we had Amina Abdulla and Sean Siculiano in third place.
Intermediate Battle Arena
In the Intermediate Battle held we had Sabarish Kailasam as our Champion with a fabulous win rate of 100% followed by Parv Parikh in second place with a win rate of 64% and Havish Venkat who had a win rate of 78%.
Sabarish played a wonderful game against Paarth Chowdhary in his final round. The game began with the Philidor Defense and Sabarish posed a serious attack on Paarth’s king forcing Paarth’s king to be exposed. Paarth then blundered his Queen giving Sabarish a massive advantage. Sabarish then brought his Rook out and exploited the opponent King’s exposed territory. On the 18th move, Sabarish checkmated Paarth’s king with his Rook and Queen.
Advanced Battle Arena
In the Advanced Battle we had Nikitha Kanagaraj in first place with a perfect win rate of 100%.
Nikitha played an incredible match in the final round against Sanjey Ramachandran our runner up who had a win rate of 60%.The game began with the Italian Game : Anti Fried Liver Variation. The game was relatively equal till the middle game where Sanjey became a pawn up. Sanjey then posed a severe attack on Nikitha’s king that won Sanjey alot of pawns. O
n the 34th move Nikitha sacrificed her Rook while posing a checkmate, that Sanjey missed, causing Sanjey to fall for a back rank checkmate on the 35th move.
Conclusion
This week saw some incredible games and a great winner list. We hope to see the same in the following weeks as well.
