Rishi Nair – Champion of the Month

Rishi Nair - Champion of the Month

Chess KLUB organizes weekly tournaments to allow students to explore their games practically. Let’s take a look at the brilliant games that were played this week and the exceptional winner list.

On the 25th of December, we hosted the Chess KLUB Monthly Championship where we had 27 participants that played against each other across 9. The winner of this month’s title is Rishi Nair who had a fabulous score of 8.5 points. Rishi played his best match against the runner-up, Nihal Tej Gundu who had a score of 8 points.

The game began with the Queen’s Gambit and Rishi became a pawn up in the middle game and used his Queen to pose a strong attack on Nihal’s King. This attack allowed Rishi to become a Rook-up. This disadvantage forced Nihal to resign on the 13th move. The second runner-up at this event was Aadithya Vausedevan who had a score of 8 points.

On Sunday, we had the Chess KLUB Classic Arena Tournament where we had Adhvik Manoj as the Champion with a splendid win rate of 89% and he played the most interesting game against the second runner up at the event. Aariv Upadhyay who had a win rate of 60%. The game began with the Anti-Fried Liver variation of the Italian Game Opening and Aariv won a central pawn in the middle game.

Adhvik then won a Knight because of an absolute pin he posed.

Adhvik took advantage of Aariv’s slightly exposed King, and he posed a strong attack using his Queen and Bishop. Adhvik concluded this attack by checkmating Aariv’s King on the 15th move using his Rook, Queen and Bishop. The runner-up at this event was Aarish Ganesh who had a win rate of 60%.

The Weekly Classic Arena Tournament was held on Wednesday where we had Nikitha Kanagaraj in first place with a great win rate of 70% followed by Aarish Ganesh in second place with a win rate of 71% and Aariv Upadhyay in third place with a win rate of 58%. Our Champion and runner-up played an exceptionally engaging game against each other which began with the Four Knights Game variation of the Italian Game Opening.

The two players exchanged their Queens in the middle game after which Aariv exchanged his Rook for Nikitha’s Knight and Bishop. They then entered the end game after exchanging their Rooks and Aariv resigned on the 52nd move when Nikitha made a passed pawn.

This week saw some incredible games and an exceptional winner list. We hope to see similar results every week.

Congratulations to all the winners.
