Chess is a game that involves constant attention and concentration, with your brain working on analyzing positions and anticipating threats. Some may even call this brain exercise. Mediaeval royals played chess to exercise their brains and sharpen their analytical skills to prepare their minds to think ahead and strategize on the battlefield as well.

Before the internet blessed all our lives, Grand Masters sat with chess books and chess positions for hours at an end. Now, try telling a Gen-Z kid to sit in front of a chess position to find the best move for 10 minutes, and you’ll see the lack of attention span. Honestly, with how far we’ve come with technology in our generation, no one expects you to sit on a puzzle for hours.

However, you do want to be able to pull through a game without getting distracted.

If the idea of sitting through a 4-hour chess game frightens you, I have a trick that has helped some renowned chess players across the world - Yoga and Meditation.

Yoga and meditation originated in ancient India and were designed to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Yoga

Yoga involves physical postures, known as asanas, which are designed to increase flexibility, strength, and balance in the body. It also incorporates breathing techniques, known as pranayama, and meditation to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve mental clarity.

Meditation

Meditation, on the other hand, involves focusing the mind on a specific object, thought, or activity with the goal of achieving a state of mental calm and relaxation. There are many different forms of meditation, including mindfulness, loving-kindness, and transcendental meditation.

Lately, Yoga and/or meditation have been the most common prescription. But to direct your attention to why these practices work for chess players specifically, let’s take a look at the following points.

1. To Increase Focus and Improve Concentration

Chess requires intense focus and concentration, and yoga and meditation can help improve these skills. By practicing mindfulness and being present at the moment, chess players can improve their ability to concentrate on the game and make better decisions. A practice like meditation improves the brain's stamina, which is imperative for a player to give his/her fullest from the start to the finish of the game.

2. Stress Relief

Chess can be a stressful game, especially during competitive play. Yoga and meditation can help players manage stress and anxiety, which can improve their performance and prevent burnout.

3. Physical Fitness

Yoga can improve flexibility, strength, and balance, all of which are important for maintaining good posture and endurance during long chess games. Physical fitness can also help players avoid injuries and recover more quickly after a game.

4. Mental Clarity

Meditation can help calm the mind and improve mental clarity, which can be helpful for analyzing complex chess positions and making strategic decisions.

Overall, incorporating yoga and meditation into a chess player's routine can help them improve their focus, manage stress, maintain physical fitness, and enhance their mental clarity, all of which can lead to improved performance on the board.

Some days are good, and some days, you don’t feel like getting out of bed. Unfortunately, as a chess player, getting your mind to perform to its fullest, even on a day you’re down is expected.

Hope this trick will help you pick yourself up on an off day, helping you accomplish your chess goals.
