Blitz Chess is a fast-paced version of chess where each player has only a few minutes on the clock to make all their moves.

What is the Time Control of Ballantyne Blitz Tournament?

The Ballantyne Blitz Tournament has a Time Control of 5 minutes and 0 second increments.

How many rounds are there in the Ballantyne Blitz Tournament?

There will be a minimum of 5 rounds and a maximum of 9 rounds. This will depend on the # of players participating in the tournament.

How is the winner determined in a Blitz Tournament?

The winner of a Blitz Chess Tournament is determined by the total number of points earned throughout the tournament. Points are typically awarded for a win, a draw, or a loss. 1 point for a win, 0.5 point for a draw and 0 point for a loss.

What happens if two players have the same number of points at the end of a Blitz Chess Tournament?

If two players have the same number of points at the end of a Blitz Chess Tournament, tiebreaks may be used to determine the winner. At the Ballantyne Blitz Tournament we will decide the winner based on the Play Offs, instead of the Tie-Break scores.

Can players request a draw in the tournament?

Yes, the players can request a draw. However, a draw will only get 0.5 points.

What is the No Show policy?

If you have registered for the tournament and do not show up, you’re denying someone an opportunity to participate in the tournament. Hence we do not encourage “No Shows”, unless there are exceptions.

What is the “No Electronic” policy?

All tournament players are barred from carrying any forms of electronics to the tournament arena. No exceptions. Any one found carrying electronic device will be barred from the tournament.

What is the best way to prepare for a tournament?

Solve puzzles and watch games on the opening you like to play.
